Where to stay in Nozawa Onsen

Four parts of the village, compared on the things that decide a week: the walk to the lifts, kids, no-car trips, dinner and the baths.

Where to stay · Checked Oct 2026 for 2026–27

The short version

Nozawa Onsen is a compact hot-spring village on a slope below the ski area. You do not need a car once you are here. The choice is mostly about your morning: walk to the Yu Road and ride up to Hikage, or stay at Nagasaka next to the gondola. Personally I'd suggest the village centre or the streets below the Yu Road for a first trip, because 32 of the 42 places on our restaurant guide are in the village, along with most of the thirteen free baths.

Village centre (Ōyu-dōri) 大湯通り

The old heart of Nozawa Onsen, around the Ōyu bathhouse and the main street, Ōyu-dōri. Most of the restaurants and bars are here, with six free baths within a few minutes of each other and family-run minshuku such as Wakagiri on the main street.

Walk times: Wakagiri, a minshuku on Ōyu-dōri, lists the Yu Road walkway to the slopes as 7 minutes on foot, with six public baths (Ōyu, Jūōdō, Yokochi, Kawahara-yu, Matsuba and Asagama) within 5 minutes. (Wakagiri listing)

Best when

  • You want dinner, bars and baths on the doorstep
  • It is your first trip and you want to walk everywhere at night
  • You want a Japanese inn rather than an apartment

Skip when

  • You hate walking with skis: every morning starts with a walk to the Yu Road
  • You want quiet nights near the street bars

Staying for the fire festival on 15 January? See the festival note below before you book.

Below the Yu Road 遊ロード

The streets at the foot of the Yu Road, the free moving walkway that climbs from the village to the Hikage base. Hikage has the main ski school, ticket offices, the daycare centre and the kids park.

Walk times: Himecho@Yasushi, a townhouse at the foot of the Yu Road, lists 2 minutes to the Yu Road, 7 minutes to the Hikage Gondola, 11 minutes to the Nagasaka Gondola and 5 minutes to the Chūō bus terminal. (Nozawa Hospitality: Himecho@Yasushi)

Best when

  • Kids are in ski school or daycare at Hikage
  • You want the shortest morning to the slopes without leaving the village
  • You still want to walk down to the restaurants at night

Skip when

  • You want the first gondola to the top: Nagasaka is about 11 minutes on foot from here

This is the area I'd pick for most families. Personally I'd suggest it over Nagasaka when anyone in the group is in lessons, because the school and kids park are at the top of the walkway.

Nagasaka base 長坂

The upper side of the village around the Nagasaka Gondola, which goes straight to the upper mountain. Nagasaka Center House has the official resort rental shop (Salomon Station) and a tune-up shop.

Walk times: Address Nagasaka, apartments at the gondola base, lists 1 minute to the Nagasaka Gondola, 10 minutes to the Hikage Gondola and the Yu Road, and 12 minutes to the Chūō bus terminal. (Nozawa Hospitality: Address Nagasaka)

Best when

  • Strong skiers who want first gondola up
  • Self-catering groups who want apartments
  • You want to hire gear at the gondola

Skip when

  • Small kids are in lessons at Hikage: the resort's Naski GO snowmobile shuttle between the two costs ¥750 one way
  • You want to stumble home from the bars in two minutes

The free village shuttle links Nagasaka with the Central Terminal from 12 December 2026 to 28 March 2027, roughly every 20–30 minutes on weekdays and more often at weekends. The last bus back down from Nagasaka is at 17:00, so you walk home after dinner in the village.

Nakao and Shinden 中尾・新田

The southern side of the village, around the Nakao and Shinden stops on the Nozawa Onsen Liner bus from Iiyama. It has its own free bath, Nakao-no-yu.

Walk times: Nozawa Peaks lists a chairlift 4 minutes (250 m) away that links to the Nagasaka Gondola, the village centre 8 minutes along a flat heated street, Nakao-no-yu 2 minutes, and the Chūō bus terminal 10 minutes. (Nozawa Peaks location page)

Best when

  • You arrive by the Liner bus and want a short walk from the stop
  • You want to be a little away from the main street but still walk to dinner
  • You are driving and need parking close by

Skip when

  • Kids need Hikage every morning: you are on the far side of the village from the ski school

The Liner stops at Shinden and Nakao before the Central Terminal, so you can get off nearer your lodge.

Getting around once you are here

The Yu Road is a free moving walkway from the village up to the Hikage base. The free village shuttle runs between the Central Terminal and the Nagasaka bus terminal from 12 December 2026 to 28 March 2027. On weekdays the first bus leaves the Central Terminal at 08:13, and the last bus back from Nagasaka is at 17:00, with extra runs at weekends and over New Year. The resort has a live bus tracker on its shuttle page.

For families based at Nagasaka, Naski GO is a paid snowmobile shuttle between the Nagasaka Gondola and the Hikage Information Center, ¥750 one way, with one preschool child free per paying adult. Priority goes to families using the daycare, kids park and kids ski school, and it gets busy at weekends, so allow extra time.

Gear is easy from any of the four areas. See the ski and snowboard hire guide for which shops deliver to your lodge, and the village map to check what is near your street.

Fire festival night

On 15 January 2027 (a Friday) the village holds the Dōsojin fire festival. In 2026, tickets to the night fire ceremony went only to residents and to guests staying in accommodation inside Nozawa Onsen village, issued through your lodge. A room in Iiyama does not qualify. If those dates matter, book a village room first and ask the lodge about tickets. Full details are on the fire festival guide.

Not fussed about the area? Search all of Nozawa Onsen and filter by map. Personally I'd suggest checking the walk to the Yu Road or the Nagasaka Gondola on the map before you book, since walk times vary a lot from street to street.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best area to stay in Nozawa Onsen?
For most first trips, the village centre or the streets below the Yu Road. Both put the restaurants and free baths on foot, and the Yu Road walkway takes you up to the Hikage base. Strong skiers who want the first gondola up often prefer Nagasaka.
Can I stay in Nozawa Onsen without a car?
Yes. The Nozawa Onsen Liner bus runs from Iiyama Station into the village, stopping at Shinden, Nakao and the Central Terminal. Inside the village you walk, use the Yu Road walkway, or take the free village shuttle to Nagasaka (12 December 2026 to 28 March 2027).
Is there ski-in ski-out accommodation?
Some lodges at the Nagasaka base sit right by the gondola; Address Nagasaka, for example, lists a one-minute walk. Most of the village is a short walk or shuttle ride from the lifts rather than true ski-in ski-out.
Where should families stay?
Below the Yu Road, or in the village centre near it. The ski school, daycare and kids park are all at Hikage, at the top of the walkway. From Nagasaka, the resort runs a paid snowmobile shuttle (Naski GO, ¥750 one way, preschoolers free with a paying adult) to Hikage.
When should I book for the fire festival?
As early as you can. Entry to the fire ceremony on 15 January went only to residents and guests staying in the village in 2026, so 15 January rooms are in demand during peak ski season.

Checked Oct 2026 against the resort's village shuttle timetable, the Naski GO page, the village Liner timetable and the lodge pages linked in each area. Walk times are as published by each lodge.
