Tokyo to Nozawa Onsen — how to get there.

Shinkansen to Iiyama plus Nozawa Onsen Liner, highway bus from Shinjuku, or drive. A 7-day JR Pass can make sense if you add Kyoto or other stops.

First-timer summary

Nozawa Onsen is not an airport destination. Budget 3.5–5 hours from Tokyo depending on your mode. The default path is Hokuriku Shinkansen Tokyo or Ueno to Iiyama (about 1 hour 50 minutes), then Nozawa Onsen Liner shuttle (25 minutes). Highway bus from Shinjuku also exists. Do not plan to ski on arrival day. Once you arrive, book your English ski lessons and scout dinner options.

Land late? Tokyo hotel, bags on takkyubin (luggage forwarding) to the lodge, train in the morning. That is normal, not a failure.

Narita NRT

Narita is farther from Nozawa than Haneda. Take a shared van if you have kids and ski bags, or N'EX/Skyliner into Tokyo then shinkansen to Iiyama or Nagano. Narita to Nozawa is most of a day. Land late? Tokyo hotel, bags on takkyubin, train in the morning.

Haneda HND

Haneda is closer to the Tokyo shinkansen network than Narita. Tokyo Monorail or Keikyu into JR, then Hokuriku Shinkansen to Iiyama or Nagano. Haneda to Nozawa village is 3.5–4.5 hours with tight connections, more often 4–5 hours with buffer. Best when you land early enough to catch the Liner shuttle.

Already in Iiyama

Already in Iiyama from a shinkansen? Nozawa Onsen Liner shuttle bus is the last leg (25 minutes, ¥600). Runs several times a day winter season. Check live timetables on nozawakanko.jp. Taxi is about ¥4,000–¥5,000 if the bus doesn't match.

How to choose

  1. 01 · Fastest public transport

    Hokuriku Shinkansen to Iiyama, then Nozawa Onsen Liner shuttle. Best when you have a JR Pass. About 3.5–4 hours door to village.

  2. 02 · No JR Pass, budget matters

    Highway bus from Shinjuku or Ikebukuro. About 4.5–5 hours. ¥5,000–¥6,500 depending on peak. Check live timetables.

  3. 03 · Family with ski bags + jet lag

    Shared van from airport kerb to lodge. 5–7 hours. Best when your flight matches the van schedule. Miss the last van and you're paying for a private transfer.

  4. 04 · You'll explore Nagano

    Rent a car with winter tyres and IDP. Haneda to Nozawa is about 3.5–4 hours. Best when you want snow monkeys, Obuse, or grocery runs. Village is walkable — you won't need the car daily.

Tokyo to Iiyama shinkansen + Nozawa Onsen Liner

Hokuriku Shinkansen Tokyo or Ueno to Iiyama (about 1 hour 50 minutes), then Nozawa Onsen Liner shuttle bus (25 minutes) direct to the village. Total door-to-door is about 3.5–4 hours with connections.

Best when

  • You have a JR Pass that covers Tokyo to Iiyama (7-day national, JR East Nagano, or Hokuriku Arch).
  • You want the fastest public transport option.
  • Solo or couple with manageable luggage.

Skip when

  • You don't have a JR Pass and are comparing total cost to a highway bus.
  • Family with four ski bags and jet lag — shared van may be kinder.
  • Iiyama to Nozawa Liner doesn't match your train arrival (check live timetables).

Tokyo to Nagano shinkansen + local bus

Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano (80 minutes), then Nagaden bus Nagano to Nozawa Onsen (about 1 hour 20 minutes). Slower than the Iiyama route but more frequent bus departures.

4–5 hours door to village

¥8,450–¥8,850 (shinkansen reserved) + ¥1,500 (Nagaden bus)

Best when

  • Iiyama Liner times don't match your train.
  • You have a JR Pass.
  • You already planned Nagano (snow monkeys, Zenko-ji).

Skip when

  • Iiyama + Liner is available — it's faster.
  • No JR Pass and highway bus is cheaper.

Highway bus from Tokyo (Shinjuku or Ikebukuro)

Direct bus Shinjuku or Ikebukuro to Nozawa Onsen village. About 4.5–5 hours depending on traffic. Fewer departures than Hakuba buses but exists in winter.

Best when

  • No JR Pass.
  • You're already in Shinjuku or Ikebukuro.
  • Budget matters more than speed.

Skip when

  • You have a JR Pass — shinkansen to Iiyama is faster.
  • Bus timetable doesn't match your arrival (check live schedules).
  • Family with kids prefers the shinkansen comfort.

Shared shuttle van (Narita or Haneda)

Airport kerb to lodge door. Five to seven hours depending on traffic, stops, and weather. Best for families with ski bags.

Rent a car

Rent at Haneda or Narita with winter tyres (studless) and an IDP. Haneda to Nozawa is about 3.5–4 hours expressway plus local roads when clear. Narita adds an hour.

Best when

  • You'll explore Nagano (Obuse, snow monkeys, Togakushi).
  • Group of four where car rental splits cheaper than four train tickets.
  • You want grocery runs and flexibility.

Skip when

  • Village is compact and walkable — you won't need the car daily.
  • Driving Narita to Nozawa jet-lagged at midnight is a bad plan.
  • Solo or couple where train is faster and simpler.

JR Pass

JR Pass can make sense for Nozawa if you add Kyoto or other stops.

A 7-day national JR Pass pays for itself on Tokyo–Kyoto–Tokyo, or Tokyo plus Hokkaido. If Nozawa is the only trip, compare the pass cost to buying individual Hokuriku Shinkansen tickets Tokyo to Iiyama (about ¥9,000 reserved one-way).

Regional passes (JR East Nagano, Hokuriku Arch) can make sense if you add Matsumoto, Kanazawa, or snow monkeys. Recalculate on the JR website and come back.

The Nozawa Onsen Liner shuttle from Iiyama is not JR — you pay ¥600 separately whether you have a pass or not.
