01 · The mountain
One resort, ski-in village
- Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort: 36 runs, village base with thirteen free onsen. Terrain for beginners to experts; intermediates have the most options. Resort detail →
- Night skiing: Available some evenings during peak season (check resort schedule for specific dates).
- Lift pass: Window or online purchase — comparable prices. Multi-day passes available.
02 · Getting there
Iiyama shinkansen + shuttle (don't buy 7-day JR Pass for Nozawa only)
Hokuriku Shinkansen Tokyo or Ueno to Iiyama (about 1 hour 50 minutes), then Nozawa Onsen Liner shuttle (25 minutes) or local bus. Highway bus from Shinjuku exists but slower (4.5–5 hours). A 7-day national JR Pass is usually a bad buy if Nozawa is the only long rail leg — it only makes sense if you add Kyoto or other stops.
03 · Thirteen free onsen
Village public baths — wash before you soak
Thirteen free communal hot spring baths (sotoyu / 外湯) scattered through the village. Maintained by local bath committees (yunakama) — donation coins appreciated. Bring a small towel; no towel in the tub. Most close 22:00 or 23:00. Ōyu (大湯) is good for first-timers — central location, iconic architecture.
04 · First-night dinner
Book ahead during peak weeks
Village restaurants fill up during Australian school holidays. Most places close 14:00–17:00 (lunch/dinner gap). Cash is still common; cards more accepted at larger restaurants. No tipping in Japan — the price is the price.
05 · English ski school
Book November at latest for peak weeks
Group and private English lessons available in Nozawa. Kids programs need advance booking. Peak weeks (Christmas, New Year, Australian school holidays) fill early — November booking at latest. Pick group vs private before paying deposit.
